United Hospital Center (UHC) Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is designed as an advanced discipline of study for graduates of an accredited educational program in Radiologic Technology.

UHC Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is 18 months in length, beginning each year in July. The program incorporates clinical and didactic experiences to prepare individuals for professional abdomen, vascular, obstetric, and gynecologic sonography.
Students participate in 40 hours of didactic and clinical education on Mondays through Fridays. No weekend, holiday, or off-shift attendance is required. Sonography students are awarded seven weeks of vacation in December, March, June, and September during the 18-month training program and personal and disability days.
Accreditation
The Obstetrics and Gynecology, Abdomen-Extended, and Vascular DMS Program at United Hospital Center is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org ) upon the recommendation of the Joint Review on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS).

Degree Requirements
As a prerequisite to admission, applicants must successfully complete an accredited program in radiologic technology and possess American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) credentials of R.T. (R) with an active status. Registry-eligible applicants will be considered probationary and will be required to pass the ARRT certification examination in Radiography within the first 90 days of sonography training.
United Hospital Center Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program operates under nationally established Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs in Diagnostic Medical Sonography for continual development, evaluation, and self-analysis. Didactic courses are conducted at United Hospital Center; Clinical rotations are scheduled at United Hospital Center, VA Medical Center, United Vascular and Vein Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital, WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital, and several OB/GYN physician practices strategically located within a 35-mile radius of United Hospital Center.
Admission Criteria
A completed application and all required documentation must be returned to the program office by February 1 of the year of admission into the training program. Upon receipt of the completed application, the candidate will be contacted to schedule an interview. Interviews will be conducted in early March so that letters of notification to all candidates may be mailed by April 1.
Registry-eligible applicants (student radiographers graduating before July 1) should submit:
- Completed program application (must be postmarked by February 1).
- Radiologic Technology Program Transcript.
- ACT- minimum composite of 19 (SAT – minimum of 990)
- Academic transcripts for college courses or any postsecondary training programs, if applicable
Registered Radiologic Technologist applicants should submit:
- Completed program application (must be postmarked by February 1).
- ARRT Scaled Scores OR Radiologic Technology Program Transcript.
- Evidence of current valid credentials ( i.e., copy of ARRT certificate or wallet card).
- Academic transcripts for college courses or any postsecondary training programs, if applicable
Reference form letters must be completed by individuals listed on the application. Applicants employed in radiologic technology must provide one reference from a current supervisor or manager. A Program Director or faculty representative must provide one reference for applicants enrolled in radiologic technology programs. These completed references and other required documentation may accompany the application or may be submitted independently; however, only documentation received by February 1 will be evaluated during the admission process.
Admission Process
Students are selected based on academic and professional transcripts and personal interviews. It is in the applicant’s best interest to be thorough in submitting academic and professional transcripts, as the system for selection will be point-based. Other required documentation will vary by the applicant and is specified below.
Program Goals and Objectives
UHC Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program will deliver a sound and comprehensive educational experience to fulfill the following goals:
- Goal 1: To prepare competent entry-level abdominal-extended sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
- Goal 2: To prepare competent entry-level obstetric and gynecologic sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
- Goal 3: To prepare competent entry-level vascular sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.
